Maxene Raymond
" Seeing makes me paint and painting makes me see."

Maxene Raymond is an artist born in New York and currently living and working on Cape Cod. With a 30 year career in interior design, she has long been involved with the effects of color, space, and light. In 2009 she began studying pastel painting with Odin Smith at the Cape Cod Art Association, and became a juried member there in 2010. In 2016, she was honored with the designation of Master Artist at the Cape Cod Art Center, in 2018 with Signature Membership in the Connecticut Pastel Society, an in 2020 with full membership in the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, New York. As well, she is a member and former board member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, associate member of the Pastel Society of America, Cotuit Center for the Arts, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art where she has been invited to exhibit in the Collector’s Gallery. Maxene has been juried into numerous national shows where she has been recognized with special awards.
Maxene uses various grounds (sanded papers, newsprint(!)) and underpainting methods (acrylic, oil) layered with soft pastels. Originally concentrating on landscapes and seascapes, she has recently been working on impressionistic interiors, still lifes, portraits, and figures in oil in addition to pastel. As well, she has created a series of digitally altered photo prints based on her original paintings and underpaintings. Her ethereal impressionistic compositions employ bold color and mark making to convey the energy she observes in her subjects.
